In the AP Digital Edge program, AP Studio Art: 2-D Design students work on their portfolio by engaging in activities that require the use of Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud. These activities focus on challenging 2-D Design Portfolio concepts and skills and also give students a chance to practice the skills tested on the Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) exam for Visual Communication Using Photoshop.
Adobe Certification in Photoshop
The Adobe Certification Program oversees official certification in Adobe Photoshop software. Throughout the semester, students taking part in AP Digital Edge prepare for the exam that earns them Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) certification for Visual Communication Using Photoshop.

Using Photoshop in AP Studio Art: 2-D Design
Here are some AP Studio Art 2-D Design Portfolio concepts and skills, along with the Photoshop skills used to explore them, that are featured in AP Digital Edge lessons and activities:
- Responding to specific design objectives. In the course of creating a magazine cover composition for the Breadth or Concentration section of their portfolio, students practice the Photoshop skills of planning an image; setting up files in appropriate formats; working with layers; making selections; using drawing, painting, and type tools; and preparing work for presentation.
- Transformation and growth. In the course of exploring the concepts of time and change to create two or more works of art for the Concentration section of their portfolio, students apply a variety of Photoshop tools and processes together with design elements and principles to manipulate form and content.
The teachers' resources map the Photoshop skills practiced in each lesson and activity and give tips for guiding students' Photoshop use.
As an example, let's look at an AP Digital Edge lesson plan for AP Studio Art 2-D Design called “Infographics in the AP 2-D Design Portfolio."
In this lesson, the teacher begins by asking students to investigate the concept of infographics. The teacher then leads students in an exploration of the functions and design of infographics, explaining how and why this type of image is created.
After analyzing the form, function, and content of a variety of infographic compositions, students use Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud tools and processes to design an infographic. Student teams practice working with design elements and principles and Photoshop techniques to create a simple infographic composition. Students then work individually, applying their learning to design an original composition that conveys data or facts about an aspect of the natural world.
This lesson's learning objectives state that after the lesson, students will be skilled at using 2-D design elements and principles to visually represent data or knowledge and creating a composition for the Breadth or Concentration section of their AP Studio Art 2-D Design portfolio that demonstrates their individual perspective and technical competence. Students will also have practiced Photoshop skills including creating a new Photoshop document; working with layers; making selections; using drawing, painting, and text tools; and preparing a composition for presentation.
